Napa Wine Train Versus Laces + Limos Tour

Local Wally

Which is MORE WORTH IT? Napa Wine Train or Laces + Limos

Napa Valley Wine Train

Laces + Limos

If you’re coming to Napa most likely you’ve stumbled upon a number of unique experiences that have you wondering if they are WORTH IT. There’s hot air balloon rides, bike rentals, custom tours, but the two biggest and most popular attractions are the NAPA VALLEY WINE TRAIN and LACES + LIMOS. Both promise a once in a lifetime experience and both deliver on that promise, but which one is worth your time… and money?

Napa Valley Wine Train

What a lot of people get wrong about the Wine Train is that they think it’s a sort of hop on, hop off sort of transportation. It’s not. Well, sort of not. There are a number of experiences -

  • LEGACY EXPERIENCE: Taste on the train, stop for a photo op in front of the Napa sign, have lunch on the train, then stop at Charles Krug and V. Sattui for tastings. Pricing varies depending on the season but currently it’s $645 per person. Get $30 off per person with a Priority Wine Pass (pass is $39 and you only need one for every 4 people for this discount).

  • GRGICH HILLS TASTING: Lunch and a stop at Grgich Hills. Currently $380 per person.

  • VISTA DOME LUNCH: Lunch on the wine train, no getting off. Currently $380 per person.

  • GOURMET EXPRESS LUNCH: Lunch in the standard car, no getting off. Currently $225 to $275 per person. Get $20 off per person for up to 4 people with one Priority Wine Pass. Get Pass Here.

  • TASTING ON THE RAILS: Elevated lunch experience, no getting off. Currently $645 per person.

  • AFTERNOON TEA: Chandon bubbles, then teas and tea time snacks, no getting off. Currently $225 per person.

  • VISTA DOME DINNER: Dinner, no getting off. Currently $360 per person.

  • GOURMET EXPRESS DINNER: Dinner in their standard car, no getting off. Currently $215 per person. Get $20 off per person for up to 4 people with one Priority Wine Pass. Get Pass Here.

  • TASTING ON THE RAILS, DINNER: Elevated dinner with wine pairings. Currently $425 to $475 per person.

Laces + Limos Tuk Tuk Tour

Getting to the wineries is half the fun when your ride is a 3-wheeled Tuk Tuk and the path you take is a back country Napa road. Expect a truly gourmet lunch set up in the vineyards with every experience. Tasting fees paid at the wineries.

  • NAPA WINE SAFARI: Join a small group on a full day experience includes stops at hidden gem wineries, a private chef driven picnic lunch served right on the vineyards, an a complimentary digital photo album. $250 per person.

  • JUST US 2. Private full day experience, stop at various hidden gem wineries (winery selection can be customized based on your preferences), chef driven gourmet picnic lunch served right in the vineyards, complimentary digital photo album. $695 total for 2 people.

  • WHAT’S FOR LUNCH? Half day adventure with visit to one winery and the same gourmet picnic lunch in the vineyard. Complimentary digital photo album. $189 per person.

LOCAL WALLY DOES THE MATH AND HELPS YOU DECIDE WHICH IS WORTH IT!

So the Napa Wine Train is super expensive… but is it worth it? With prices that will set. you back more than dinner at THE FRENCH LAUNDRY and food quality that’s good but not Thomas Keller good, you’re really paying for the ambiance of a train ride. There are only two experiences that actually include winery stops.

THE NAPA VALLEY WINE TRAIN IS NOT WORTH IT IF…

  • If you only have one day in Napa and want to immerse yourself in wines and winery experiences then it’s NOT worth it.

  • If you are a foodie looking for the best food Napa has to offer you can get better food for less at an actual restaurant.

THE NAPA VALLEY WINE TRAIN IS WORTH IT IF…

  • If you have tons of money so dropping a thousand bucks to ride a train is no big deal.

  • If you have multiple days here and want an adventure to tell everyone back home about.

  • If you really, really like trains.

My take - I’ve done the wine train and thought it was OK, certainly a good experience but one that had me trying to justify the cost. Friends who have recently experienced the wine train have had much more positive feedback and loved the party atmosphere on the experience they were on (disco ball, dancing, etc). So it could go either way but no doubt about it, it’s pricey.

LACES + LIMOS IS NOT WORTH IT IF…

  • If you’re a first timer and only have one say and want to see the big names like Castello di Amorosa or Sterling. Laces + Limos tries to find the more unique wineries with more personal hospitality.

LACES + LIMOS IS WORTH IT IF…

  • If you want a picnic in the vineyards (and a gourmet picnic at that), this is the ONLY way to do it. Absolutely a stellar experience.

  • If you want authentic winery experiences that might include private tours and barrel tastings, if you want a more relaxed winery with more private experiences, they excel in this.

  • If you want to experience Napa and the country back roads with the wine and sunshine in your face, it’s an elegant way to travel.

My take: I really like Laces + Limos. It’s owned by a husband and wife team and hubby is a trained gourmet chef who prepares a gorgeous instagram ready lunch spread that’s as beautiful as it is delicious. If a picnic in the vineyards is on your bucket list this is the way to do it. Plus the wineries are unique and special and far away from the hoards of tourists. You can do the touristy wineries another day. With Laces + Limos you get winery experiences like a local.

Are "Luxury Drivers" in Napa WORTH IT? Why Pay More?

Local Wally

Coming to Napa? Are you confused over whether you can drive yourself or need to hire a driver? And how do you pick a good one? Well hey, let me help you out here with a no-nonsense response.

First, driving yourself is really risky. No doubt about it, by the end of the day you are going to be over the limit unless you really, really try hard not to have fun. Pulling people over in Napa is like shooting fish in a barrel so be smart and don’t drink and drive. OK, yes, a lot of people still do it but just like people drive home after indulging at a bar on a Friday night it’s just not worth the risk.

So just hire a driver. Easy, right? Hang on, there are so many drivers in Napa and most of them cannot legally drive your car or rental. So make sure they have the proper insurance and if you are coming with a group, with a big vehicle the license required.

Time for my disclaimer - I am happy to recommend drivers who have done a good job in the past but take no responsibility for the drivers, their behavior, their legality, etc. In other words, all of the drivers I recommend are cool people, mainly ex-tour guides who have gone out on their own, but it’s up to you to make sure they are legal. Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

So drivers can drive your rental, drive you in theirs, all for around $60 an hour on average. So why hire a Luxury Driver? Heck, what is a luxury driver?

A luxury driver is one who does more than just drive you. They act as a concierge, helping you plan your day and making the reservations for you. They typically have nicer vehicles and pride themselves on being “legal”. The luxury drivers I work with are some of the best in the valley, real wine experts who know their stuff and add to your day. If you want some Napa history as you drive, if you want some wine tasting tips, if you want some great conversation (good idea if you are hanging out with them all day) then a luxury driver is worth the extra costs. How much? Figure luxury drivers start at around $90 an hour.

At the end of the day it might cost you a couple of hundred bucks more for a luxury driver but if you hired a real concierge to do your planning you can expect to pay around $500 for this service which is included in their fees. A luxury driver will make sure that all of your stops fit what you are looking for. You won’t get the standard Beringer/V Sattui/Castle agenda - unless you want that. Usually you get deeper dives into non-touristy wineries, wineries where you might barrel taste or stroll through the vineyards with the winemaker. And it’s not snooty, I don’t do snooty and none of the drivers I work with do either.

On the opposite end of the transportation scale is Uber or Lyft which is so unpredictable that it’s hard to recommend them unless you are just going to one or two wineries and staying right on the main drag. Cell service can get spotty in Napa so an Uber can get you there but good luck calling one to pick you up. And even if you have service good luck getting an Uber to want to wind their way in the hills to pick you up. So it’s find if you want to be dropped off downtown or perhaps hit Chandon in the afternoon but not recommended if you are trying to do a complete stop by stop itinerary.

Since you made it this far if you want to get more info on a Luxury Driver just click below and I’ll connect you. No tricks, no sales pitch, they’ll answer your questions and you can decide if this is right for you.

Cheers,

Wally

Napa Wineries OPEN Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and NYE 2024

Local Wally

Coming to Napa on Christmas or New Years in 2024? Here are the wineries that are open. I’ll add more as I get more info so keep coming back! Remember, don’t assume that they will remain open with their normal hours. Some will be closing early so plan your wine tasting early in the day and have a backup plan for the afternoon on both Christmas Eve and NYE. Assume ALL wineries are closed on Christmas day and most are closed on New Years Day.

CUT TO THE CHASE: The Napa Castle (Castello di Amorosa) is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve but open NYE and NY Day.

NAPA WINERIES OPEN THANKSGIVING

There might be more but the only ones I could find are V. Sattui, Stewart Cellars, V Wine Cellars and Del Dotto Estate Winery and Cave (one location open, 1445 St. Helena Hwy. South, St. Helena, CA 94574). And of course, CALL THEM to verify and make a reservation.

Is Laces + Limos Tuk Tuk Tour Worth It?

Local Wally

Try doing this with your rental car!

Is Laces + Limos worth it?

Before I answer that perhaps a bit of background on who this is, what it is, and what it’s not. At it’s most basic Laces + Limos is a Napa tour where they transport you via a 3 wheeled electric Tuk Tuk to wineries and provide a picnic lunch. But it’s more than that - much more.

The Laces + Limos is Napa winery experience starts the moment you step into their cute little tuk tuk in front of the Archer Hotel. As you leave downtown and wind your way into the back roads of Napa you’ll pass sites and scenery that you can’t appreciate from a car or tour shuttle. The wind in your hair, the sunshine, the scent of the vineyards, it’s that elusive romance of Napa, the Napa of your dreams.

Owned by Chel and Dieter, their focus is on creating unique and authentic Napa experiences. For example, everyone wants a picnic in the vineyards. In the early days of Napa you could pull off the road and lay out a blanket but try that today and you’ll most be asked to pack it up and leave. Today the simple picnic in a vineyard experience is difficult if not impossible to find if you try to do it on your own. But with Laces + Limos you can and their tuk tuks fits right in between the vineyards. Imagine parking next to a romantic table with a white tablecloth and a gourmet picnic prepared by husband Dieter, surrounded by vineyards and grapes you can pick and taste. It surpasses everything you might imagine. Let’s take a look.

Quiet. Peaceful. You’ll feel oh so special when your Tuk Tuk turns down the row of vines and you spy a private picnic table in the distance waiting just for you. The tours are either half of full days and include the gourmet vineyard picnic lunch, which is worth the price right there. Oh darn, I jumped the gun on my click bait question of whether it’s worth it or not so yes, Laces + Limos is worth it just for the lunch experience alone. I mean, if you want to experience lunch in a vineyard then this is it! So what’s for lunch?

Every bite delicious! This is the lunch for two picnic which had so much food we packed some to go at the end.

Husband Dieter is a trained and creative chef and puts together a Napa worthy picnic spread. This is no crummy box lunch, this isn’t a shrink wrapped sandwich made the day before with a bag of chips, Laces + Limos provides a lunch that lives up to the high standard for Napa’s exquisite culinary scene. The sandwich transported me back to Paris with it’s crispy baguette filled with the highest quality ingredients. Let’s see a few more food shots. And look at the view! Right in the vineyards! Amazing!

What is is, and What it’s Not!

Laces + Limos is a unique and fun way to explore Napa with transportation in a Tuk Tuk to wineries and a stop in the vineyards for a gourmet picnic lunch that is unmatched by any other tour. Winery stops are unique as well - For example, we stopped in a Ru Vango, a winery that had not yet hit my radar and surprised me with their stunning wines and hospitality. And yes, their collection of original Salvador Dali’s artwork was quite impressive as well. How has this winery not been discovered by the masses yet is beyond me. A prime seat and private experience with one other couple overlooking the vineyards, a short tour to see the winery in action, a sharp contrast to most tour winery stops where you’re fighting for attention from the host who’s bombarded with tour groups.

We joined up with this couple during our wine tasting and relaxed in the sunshine while sipping sparkling wine. How nice was this!

And winery selection varies depending on what you might be looking for. Let them know if you’re a wine collector or simply a wine lover looking for new wines to love. There’s no pressure to buy wine but you can if you like, and while tasting fees are not included the wineries are priced at a reasonable level so you won’t get that Opus One sticker shock at the end of the tasting. Here’s a few photos of Ru Vango Winery - sparkling to start, a tour with barrel tastings, original Dali art, is this for real?

What Laces + Limos is NOT is tacky and cheesy. From the moment you step into the tuk tuk you’re greeted with Napa quality snacks and a genuine smile from Chel, the owner and host. You can tell that this is a labor of love, a passion to provide visitors with an adventure they will never forget. Here are some candids I took of Chel when she was describing a Napa landmark along the way.

Luxurious, classy, and super fun. You won’t be slinking off a fake trolley car hoping no one sees you. So Laces + Limos isn’t a tacky booze fest experience, it’s tasteful and elegant. But it’s also not snooty - even someone with zero wine experience will love this as much as a wine expert. So many of Napa’s experiences are crowded and touristy (visit the castle lately?) but Laces + Limos provides an alternative to all of that and gives you an authentic experience for about the same price as a private driver.

OK, SO LACES + LIMOS IS WORTH IT? AND WORTH YOUR TIME?

Yes, Yes! Whether you’re a romantic couple on your honeymoon or a corporate group looking for something a a bit out of the box, you can’t replicate this experience any other way so it’s definitely worth both the price and your time. I’ll let them do the actual pricing but basically for a couple it’s about what you would spend for a private driver for a day but a whole lot more fun (and don’t forget the included gourmet picnic lunch!) Even if you are only here for one day, even if you’re a first timer, you should consider this. And if you have two days or more, for sure make this part of your agenda. Reach out to Chel, the owner, and tell her Wally sent you and she will personally get you all of the info you need to decide if a Tuk Tuk tour is in your future. I hope you do it - It seriously is one of the best things to do in Napa.

"WOW! Our experience was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we booked until the very end, everything exceeded our expectations."

"4 years later it's the one experience we did during our California trip we still talk about"

"It’s not a tour you find and book, this has been an experience, the once-in-a-lifetime kind that NOT everyone has but lucky ones will"

How to Use the Priority Wine Pass for 2 for 1 Wine Tastings in Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, and Temecula

Local Wally

Two for One’s in Napa? Yes Please!

You might have heard about the Priority Wine Pass that gets you 2 for 1 deals in Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, Temecula, and even Oregon and Washington wine regions. Is this for real?

Short answer is YES, it’s for real and it really does get you two for one’s. With most wineries now charging $30 per person to taste - and much much more than that in Napa where $50+ is pretty standard - it’s pretty easy to see that you’ll save money. Good for a year with NO LIMITS on how many times you use it at any given winery, this might be the best $39 you’ve ever spent. So let’s dive in - HOW TO USE THE PRIORITY WINE PASS.

Experience Beringer for just $10 per person with the Priority Wine Pass.

STEP ONE: BUY THE PRIORITY WINE PASS AT THE RIGHT PLACE

You could buy the pass directly from the Priority Wine Pass company, you could get it on Groupon, but the cheapest place to get the pass is RIGHT HERE. That’s right, Local Wally has the lowest price on the Priority Wine Pass at just $39. Compare that to $69 on the company site and $44.85 on Groupon and there’s no reason to buy it anywhere else. PLUS when you get the pass through my site you get FREE concierge service from me and the Priority Wine Pass concierge. Passes bought through my site get special attention and more hands on assistance so picking wineries and building solid itineraries has never been easier.

Get One Pass only per couple - Most wineries will allow small groups of 4 - 6 to use the pass so if you’re coming with friends make sure they have a pass as well.

STEP TWO: REACH OUT TO ME AND THE CONCIERGE

As soon as you have the pass reach out to me and let me know your date you are coming, the number of people in your group, and any basic info on what sort of wine experience you are looking for. First timer? Wine Collector? At the same time reach out to their concierge (details on how to connect with her are sent to you once you purchase the pass) and tell her Wally Sent You and she will reach out to me and we will work on your itinerary together. Net result will be a stop by stop agenda using wineries on the Priority Wine Pass as well as any wineries on your bucket list, all in geographic order so you’re not wasting time driving up and down. PRO TIP: If the concierge does a good job make sure you leave a review as she gets compensated when this happens. Its a nice way to leave a “tip” that doesn’t come out of your pocket.

STEP THREE: MAKE RESERVATIONS

While some wineries are moving back to walk-in’s it’s always a good idea to call to reserve so you are not turned away on a busy day. Make sure you tell them you have the Priority Wine Pass so they key in the correct price. If you reserve online they often don’t have this option so call if you can but note that if they do charge you for two they can fix it once you arrive.

STEP FOUR: HIRE A DRIVER

I work with drivers who can either drive your vehicle or drive you in theirs. Most if not all of these drivers are previous tour guides so they know Napa well and all of them are quite personable which is important if you are hanging out with them all day. Just email me if you would like more info and let me know what area and hotel you are staying at if you know that so I can pick a good driver for you.

Coming with a Group?

Most of the wineries cap group size but there are some wineries that not only take big groups but will offer two for one discounts as well. This is NEW - previously wineries were very strict about limiting groups using the pass to 4 to 5 but now are open to much larger groups so if you are coming with a big group and want to save money reach out to me and I’ll personally walk you through your options. Do this BEFORE you buy the passes as the passes are non-refundable since they are digital and I don’t want you to buy the passes only to find out that the wineries you want to visit won’t honor the pass. Ahhh, just reach out to me! I’m here to help and can get you the straight info to see if this is right for you.

Perfect Gift for Wine Lovers: A 12 Month Discount Pass for Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles and San Diego

Local Wally

Makes the perfect Last Minute Gift for those who procrastinate!

Looking for the Most Excellent PERFECT Gift for your Wine Lover?

The Set Up: You need a gift for someone who loves wine but buying a bottle of wine seems too obvious and wine accessories seem sort of lame.

The Solution: Get a Priority Wine Pass for just $39 and your friend will get two for one’s and other discounts all over Napa, Sonoma, San Diego/Temecula and Paso Robles. Each pass is delivered digitally so if you are strapped on time you can get it fast. Or splurge and spend another $5 and get a plastic credit card size pass that you can wrap up all pretty with lots of ribbon and bows, very festive and very impressive. And hey, $39 is super cheap for a gift they are going to love you for.

Come Again - What is the Priority Wine Pass? The PWP is a 12 month pass that gets you two for one’s and other discounts. So if they normally would pay $55 at a winery like Sterling they now get two tastings for the same price. And there is no limit on how many times they use it. They’re going to be be loving you all year. And the $39 price is the LOWEST you will find anywhere and you will find it right here. It’s normally $69 but my readers get it for $30 off.

Who Would Love This Pass? If your friend lives in the Bay Area then the pass is a serious no brainer. They for sure are going to Napa and Sonoma multiple times a year and taking friends (like you) so this is the perfect gift. It’s also good in other wine regions like Paso Robles (perfect for your friends in LA or even Orange County) and San Diego/Temecula.

Napa Valley’s Clos Pegase and Girard, and Sonoma County’s B.R. Cohn and Kunde Bought Due to Bankruptcy

Local Wally

ARTICLE FROM THE SF CHRONICLE:

The assets were largely split between two major buyers, both billionaires: serial winery buyer Bill Foley and A. Jayson Adair, the CEO of online car auction company Copart, court filings show.

The bankruptcy court still needs to grant final approval to the successful bids. A Primary Sale Hearing is scheduled for Sept. 27.

With final approval, Bill Foley’s Foley Family Wines will acquire five wineries and brands from Vintage — Calistoga’s Swanson Vineyards, Bodega Bay’s Sonoma Coast Vineyards, Napa’s Cosentino and the Cherry Pie and Bar Dog brands — for $15 million, according to court filings. (While the Swanson and Sonoma Coast deals include tasting rooms, Cosentino’s tasting room was sold separately to vintner Brion Wise.) Foley’s offer was a stalking horse bid, which sets the threshold for bidding in a bankruptcy case. It appears that no higher bids were submitted, as these assets were not included in Tuesday’s auction.

Adair’s company Adair Winery Inc. has agreed to purchase Calistoga’s Clos Pegase and Girard, Kenwood’s B.R. Cohn and Kunde and Sonoma’s Viansa for $85 million, court filings show.

What's the Point of Wine Tasting and What Wineries Get Wrong - An Editorial on the State of Napa Valley

Sterling Vineyards adds a Tram Ride to Entice Visitors

I’ve been writing about wineries and wine tasting for a long time but I’ve been tasting wine longer. Don’t fact check me here but I do recall reading that it was Robert Mondavi who first started FREE wine tasting in Napa with the thought that if you tried it you might buy it. I started wine tasting back around 1980, just four years after the Judgement of Paris competition that out Napa on the map. Back then all tastings were free and as a 21 year old kid it was a blast driving up and down Highway 29 and just stopping at any winery that looked interesting for a free sample.

Today of course the free tastings have all but dried up (there’s one left that I know of) and I often get into debates with my friends in the industry over the purpose of wine tasting. Now if you’re in the industry perhaps look away but I think there’s a philosophical divide between wineries and your standard Napa visitor over what the purpose of wine tasting is all about.

To the winery it goes back to the Mondavi belief that if you try it you will buy it. But wineries in Napa have huge overhead and like a Vegas casino need a lot of cash to keep things running. So wineries need to sell wine to visitors, especially for wineries who make wines you won’t find in supermarkets and on restaurant wine lists. Every customer is an opportunity to sell wine or a wine club.

But here’s where I often argue with my friends in the industry - the standard wine taster isn’t thinking at the wine tasting experience as a way to decide which wines to buy. No, they are looking at the wine tasting experience as the final product, a fun way to spend a few hours or a weekend drinking good wine and having a good time. They might buy wine, they might join the club, but that wasn’t their main intention when they walked in your front door. Think about it - Do you buy every food item you sampled at Costco? No, you only buy the ones you really liked and there are probably many times you didn’t buy anything even though you liked it.

And yes, I am making sweeping generalizations here as there are still plenty of people who do buy cases of wine and plenty of wineries who offer stellar hospitality even if you don’t. But I think the wine industry needs to address how they can cater to both the wine buyer and the wine taster. Maybe it’s a simple as returning to the lower cost (and lower expectation) bar tastings that reduce the winery’s cost while addressing the customer who isn’t necessarily a wine buyer? I’m not saying I have a good plan but I am interested in what you have to say - feel free to comment below.
